Health Alert: Common Atrial Fibrillation Treatment Appears Riskier for Women. Ablation is a surgical
procedure that creates scarring within the heart in an attempt to restore a normal heart rhythm in patients with atrial
fibrillation. An analysis of data concerning nearly 59,000 atrial fibrillation patients treated with ablation revealed
that female patients were more likely to experience intermittent atrial fibrillation, as well as heart palpitations, chest
pain, fatigue, and dizziness. Cardiologist Dr. James Freeman adds, “This study is a call to arms to continue efforts to
mitigate the risk of these procedures and continue to try to improve the safety profile for women.”

Diet: Unhealthy Diet Linked to Depression. Kynurenic acid is a normal byproduct of the metabolism of
tryptophan, which is known to affect neurophysiological and neuropathological processes. A recent study that
included 169 adults found that those who consumed a Western-style diet had lower levels of kynurenic acid and a
higher risk for depression than participants who consumed a healthier diet. Neuroscientist Dr. Edwin Lim explains,
“Western-style diets high in fat, sugar, and processed foods were already known to increase the risk of depression,
but this is the first time a biological link involving the kynurenine pathway has been established… People from the
group eating an unhealthy diet had lower levels of [kynurenine acid] and more severe symptoms of depression. This

(NAFLD) is a condition that occurs when fat accumulates in the liver from causes other than excessive alcohol
consumption, and it is associated with a number of poor health outcomes. An analysis of data from the National
Health and Nutrition Examination Survey has found that NAFLD patients had a 3.5 times increased risk for heart
failure and twice the risk of early death during a 13-year time frame.

Diet: Coffee Preparation for Longevity. While the current research suggests that moderate coffee intake may
offer health benefits, it’s unclear if coffee preparation plays a role. In a study that looked that the coffee habits
of over 450,000 adults, researchers found the best outcomes came from coffee prepared from ground beans,
while decaf and instant coffee products only conferred about half the benefits to the drinker.

Exercise: HIIT Recommended for Cancer Patients. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a form of
exercise that involves short intervals of near-maximal effort—such as sprinting or stair climbing—separated by

concluded that HIIT is an effective form of exercise for cancer patients and cancer survivors due to its ability to
improve cardiorespiratory fitness and quality of life, its high adherence, and safety.

a link between increased exposure to air pollution and an elevated risk for stroke. According to an analysis of
data from the UK Biobank study on middle-aged adults who experienced a first-time stroke, those living in
areas with higher levels of air pollution also had a greater chance of developing post-stroke cardiovascular

Diet: The Benefits of One Serving of Fermented Vegetables a Day. In a recent study that included 31
women, researchers found that consuming one serving of fermented vegetables a day for six weeks can lead to

Health Alert: Many Atrial Fibrillation Patients Have Sleep Apnea. Past research has identified sleep apnea
as a risk factor for atrial fibrillation, but how common is sleep apnea in atrial fibrillation patients? In a recent
study, 185 atrial fibrillation patients completed sleep apnea testing and 93% tested positive for the condition—
52.3% primary sleep apnea, 44.8% mixed apnea, and 2.9% pure central apnea. Because managing sleep apnea
can slow atrial fibrillation progression, the finding suggests screening atrial fibrillation patients for the sleep

Diet: Healthy Food Labeling. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes that salmon can’t be labeled as
a “healthy” food under current federal regulations due to it high levels of fat, but that may soon change. A

lean proteins) to be labeled as healthy provided they are also low in saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars.

attention should be paid to the cognitive health of older adults who sustain a DRF.

sedentary time, increased obesity prevalence, environmental exposures, and alteration of the gut microbiome.
