Health Alert: Poor Metabolic Health Linked to Heart Rhythm Disorder. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of
conditions—including central obesity, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, and elevated blood sugar—that
increase the risk of poor health outcomes. According to a recent review, individuals with metabolic syndrome face a 1.5-
to 2-fold greater risk of developing atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm that can increase the risk of stroke, heart
failure, and other cardiovascular complications. The authors suggest that chronic inflammation, changes in the heart’s
structure, and dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system associated with metabolic syndrome may help explain this
association. Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, May 2026
Diet: Healthy Eating May Protect Cancer Survivors’ Hearts. Cancer survivors face an increased risk of cardiovascular
disease due to factors related to both cancer and its treatment. A study involving 10,414 cancer survivors found that those
with the healthiest dietary patterns—including Mediterranean-style and DASH diets—had up to a 24% lower risk of
developing cardiovascular disease during the 13-year follow-up period.

Exercise: Is Higher Physical Activity Linked to Diabetic Neuropathy Symptoms? Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is a
type of nerve damage that can cause numbness, tingling, pain, or weakness, most often in the feet and legs. A study of 463
adults with diabetes found that those experiencing high levels of physical activity were more than twice as likely to report
neuropathy symptoms than those with low activity levels. Because physical activity remains an important part of diabetes
management, additional research is needed to determine whether certain forms or intensities of exercise may increase
neuropathy symptoms in some individuals. Orthopedic Reviews, June 2026
Chiropractic: Chiropractic Adjustments May Help Failed Back Surgery Patients. Persistent spinal pain syndrome
type 2, also known as failed back surgery syndrome, is a chronic pain condition that can occur after spinal surgery despite
technically successful procedures. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 100 studies found that spinal manipulative
therapy—the primary treatment provided by chiropractors—was among the rehabilitative approaches associated with
significant improvements in functional outcomes over a twelve-month period. Cureus, May 2026
Mental Attitude: Non-Drug Approaches May Enhance Depression Care. A systematic review of 31 studies found that
exercise and bright light therapy may be useful additions to standard depression treatments, particularly for individuals
who experience an incomplete response to medication or psychotherapy. Australasian Psychiatry, June 2026
Wellness/Prevention: Being Metabolically Healthy May Not Eliminate Weight-Related Stroke Risk. Using data
from the Northern Sweden Health and Disease Study, researchers report that stroke risk was 14% higher among
overweight individuals and 36% higher among those with obesity, even after accounting for metabolic risk factors such as
high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, and unhealthy cholesterol levels. These findings suggest that excess body
weight may affect stroke risk through pathways beyond traditional metabolic markers. Scientific Reports, May 2026
