Health Alert: Some Skin Conditions Could Point to Type 2 Diabetes. Using data from the Northern Finland Birth
Cohort 1966 study, researchers found that psoriasis and tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) were associated with type 2
diabetes. The findings suggest these skin conditions may be potential indicators of type 2 diabetes and could warrant
closer attention to a patient’s metabolic health. BMJ Open, July 2026
Diet: Higher Coffee Intake Linked to Healthier Body Composition. An analysis of data concerning 2,264
middle-aged adults found that higher coffee intake was associated with less total and visceral fat and greater skeletal
muscle mass. In men, higher coffee intake was also associated with higher total testosterone and a more favorable
glucose-insulin profile. European Journal of Nutrition, July 2026
Exercise: Physical Activity May Help Improve Balance in Children. Among 409 preschool-aged children,
researchers found that light physical activity was associated with better static balance at age five and better dynamic
balance at age six. The findings suggest that physical activity intensity may influence different aspects of balance in
different ways during early childhood. BMC Public Health, July 2026
Chiropractic: Ankle Function May Contribute to Future Lower Back Pain. Researchers found that low back
pain developed in 54.0% of people with an ankle injury, compared with 9.54% of healthy controls. Even after
adjusting for other risk factors, people with ankle injuries had about 19 times the risk of developing nonspecific low
back pain. The findings suggest that the potential effects of an ankle injury may extend beyond the ankle and
highlight the importance of appropriate rehabilitation following an injury. Past studies have found that manual
therapies provided by chiropractors may support recovery following an ankle sprain.

Mental Attitude: Routine Wellness Visits May Help Identify Early Cognitive Changes. A study that looked at
data from the Health and Retirement Study and Medicare claims found that Medicare Annual Wellness Visits are
associated with earlier detection of mild cognitive impairment, allowing patients and healthcare providers to evaluate
treatable factors linked to cognitive decline, including physical inactivity, smoking, sleep apnea, and
hypothyroidism. Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics, July 2026
Wellness/Prevention: 1 in 3 Type 2 Diabetics Show Signs of Nerve Damage in the Feet. The vibration perception
threshold (VPT) test measures how well the nerves in the feet detect vibration using a handheld device called a
biothesiometer. In a study of 652 adults with type 2 diabetes, researchers found that 31% had an abnormal VPT,
indicating significant peripheral nerve dysfunction. Those with abnormal results were also much more likely to have
complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, heart, brain, and feet, highlighting the importance of routine nerve
screening. Diabetes & Vascular Disease Research, August 2026
